‘Laika’ VR Film

Laika is a full 3D immersive experience created for the Oculus quest 2.

Working alongside Oscar winning director Asif Kapadia and Graphic Novel artist Nick Abadzis we produced a 25 minute short film. Laika was screened in headsets in selected cinemas, public spaces, film festivals and museums around the country.

I became involved with the project after the pre production was complete and was responsible for the VR and immersive elements of the film.

I visualised, designed and implemented a narrative structure that allowed the linear story elements to exist in an immersive world. Taking cues from immersive theatre we used lighting, set design and many other techniques to really develop something interesting to watch and experience. I was also responsible for seeing the project through to completion.

We later completed a flat 2D and much higher res version of the film for Film4.

The film premiered at the London Film festival and has been well recieved. Both Asif and Nick have given many interviews about the film and the creative process, a selection of which are below:

Unfortunately, I’m only able to link to the trailer which is composed mostly of early content. The full version will hopefully be online and on the Oculus store soon.
